COMMUNITY
Harris Newmark Continuation High School offers alternative curriculum in a unique environment. Located in the Westlake community of Central Los Angeles, Newmark shares a campus with Belmont High School and Sal Castro Middle School, each school operating independently with discrete student populations. Also known as Newmark High School, the school is part of the LAUSD Educational Options Program providing alternative approaches in public schooling.
The curriculum design model of the continuation school program is such that students from across all of LAUSD may apply to attend after their freshman year if they are deemed to have insufficient units to graduate in a timely manner.
Students at-risk of timing out and not completing their high school diploma are removed from their home school to a continuation or adult school program to recover units then return to their home school, graduate from the continuation high school with a high school diploma, or graduate from an adult school.
Although Newmark High School serves a student population from a broader geographic location, the immediate community is representative, dominant, and relevant to the student, school, family, and community construct.
The Westlake community members number 120,000 in about 3 square miles which is among the highest densities for the city of Los Angeles and among the highest densities for the country. The community is largely people of Latino and Asian heritage while the median income and education levels are low for the city of Los Angeles.
